Country: USA

In a spacious old house, far from the noise of the city, He and She live. He is a famous writer, experiencing creative stagnation. She is his young muse, who faithfully takes care of her husband and restores his mansion after a terrible fire. Their paradise life goes awry when an unexpected guest appears in the house - a longtime admirer of the writer.
Show in full ... Following him, his wife comes to the couple, and then the children. The family skirmish escalates into a tragedy, due to which not only the idyll of the host relationship begins to crumble, but also the house, whose destruction brings Her almost physical pain.

Analysis
Darren Aronofsky is considered to be one of the best directors of our time. He combines the genre form of his works with a complex structure that makes the viewer sweat seriously in order to unravel all the meanings of the picture.
"Mother!" - a verbose picture that creates an unplowed field for all kinds of interpretations.
First of all, I want to say about the biblical plot on which this picture is based. “Mom!” Is an allegory about God and the Earth. The poet, whose life is aimed at creating the beautiful, personifies God. His wife personifies Mother Earth, creating her home from scratch, relying only on her own strength. Further in the house there are unexpected guests who personify Adam and Eve. God in the person of the poet by his grace permits them to live with them. Adam and Eve, who should be grateful to “God” and “Earth Mother,” begin to establish their own rules in the house, which in the end lead to a real catastrophe. As a result, which destroys the house. The sons of Adam and Eve also appear in the house. They begin a skirmish over their father’s inheritance. In a dispute, one brother kills another (Cain Abel). After the collapse of the house, the main character becomes pregnant. Her son personifies Jesus born in agony. When a child is in the hands of people, they kill him by their stupidity, after starting to eat his flesh. We see the whole sinful essence of human nature, which is allowed into our home (on Earth), and it only spoils and destroys everything. Using the mercy of other people.

Also this picture tells about the nature of creativity. What are the burdens facing the artist? What is he ready to do for the sake of his creation? End justifies the means? The poet has long been in a creative crisis. He had not written anything for a long time; he cannot find ideas in his head. Therefore, when unexpected guests arrive at the house, he listens with every possible interest to their stories, which will help him find the idea for writing a book. His wife is his muse, which has not inspired him for a long time, he does not feel her love. She is more concerned about building a house that personifies family relationships. When people come to the house, she is not enthusiastic about this. The family is a union of two people, when outsiders invade this union, the family collapses, which we see by the example of the destruction of a house. When it turns out that Gaia is pregnant, the poet finds inspiration, and their house rises from the ashes. The poet, drawing inspiration from external events, creates a magnificent poem that is in unprecedented demand. A crowd of people surges in his house, which, out of gratitude, he lets into the house. People who should behave themselves again ruin the house. The poet, to whom the opinion of strangers is very important, shows his whole nature. After all, creation itself does not matter to him; the opinion of people is important to him. For their sake, he is ready to make any concessions. In the end, we learn that the poet did not love his wife, he needed only her love, necessary for inspiration. As a result, when the wife dies, he takes away from her the most important thing - love in the form of a diamond.

Thus, we see that even the most beautiful things a person can ruin. The poet uses art and love to satisfy his own ambitions. He is ready to sacrifice anything to please people.

Darren Aronofsky once again reaches the technological peak in directing. The film is filled with all sorts of special effects, which, coupled with unsurpassed directorial work, give rise to a magnificent picture.

The son of conservative Jewish parents

Darren was born into a conservative Jewish family living in Brooklyn, New York. Chemistry teacher Abraham and his fellow teacher Charlotte Aronofsky rejoiced at the first-born, born February 12, 1969. They honored traditions: they celebrated all the holiday dates, knowing the history of their people and having respect for what this people went through.

Parents often took Darren and his sister Patti to Broadway productions, which inspired both children of Aronofsky. Patti was engaged in a professional ballet school, Darren became interested in cinema and show business in general.

World Travel and Harvard

Darren Aronofsky grew up near the beach in Manhattan, graduated from Edward Marrow High School and in his youth tried himself as a field biologist, went on an expedition to Kenya (in 1985), where he studied ungulates, and then to Alaska (in 1986). He later said: “The school of field research has changed my perception of the world.” Interest in nature made the guy go on a trip: with almost one backpack, he laid his route from Europe to the Middle East.

Returning from wanderings, Darren became a Harvard student, where he specialized in the field of anthropology and studied cinema. During his studies, Aronofsky realized how much he was passionate about films, he watched the tapes of Akira Kurosawa, Roman Polanski, Terry Gilliam, Signa Tsukamoto, Hubert Selby Jr., Spike Lee and Jim Jarmusch. After receiving his diploma in 1991, Darren Aronofsky also decided to become a director.

Full-length debut: Pi

His thesis, the short film “Supermarket Cleaning,” was a finalist for the student Oscar. In 1992, Darren received a master's degree in directing (from the AFI Conservatory). The debut full-length film "Pi" director Darren Aronofsky released in 1997.

The budding director had few funds, the work dragged on for more than two years, and the main role in the film was played by his Harvard comrade Sean Gullet. The premiere of the thriller took place at the Sundance Film Festival. Darren spent 60 thousand dollars on the shooting, and at the box office the surrealistic picture managed to earn more than 3.22 million dollars.

Requiem for a Dream: Oscar nomination

The sensational adaptation of Hubert Selby’s book “Requiem for a Dream” is still considered a “visual aid” against all kinds of addictions. The main roles in the film of the year 2000 were played by Jared Leto (who refused sex and sugar for the time of filming), Marlon Wayans and Jennifer Connelly. Acting as the mother of the hero, Summer Ellen Burstyn became an Oscar nominee.

Biography

Darren Aronofsky, an American director, producer, and screenwriter of independent cinema, was born in Brooklyn, New York, on February 12, 1969, into a Jewish family. Both of his parents worked as teachers. They identified the boy to study at one of the best schools in America - Edward Merow's New York High School.

After graduation, Darren went on a six-month trip to Europe and the Middle East, and in 1987 entered Harvard University. Here, an inquisitive young man studied anthropology, but soon switched to cinema. In 1990, the course work of the future director was his first short film "Cleaning the Supermarket", which caused flattering reviews of serious criticism. Aronofsky graduated with honors from Harvard with a bachelor of arts. read more

Darren continued his professional studies in Los Angeles at the American Institute of Motion Picture Conservatory. His graduation work was the short film Protozoa (1993), which allowed him to graduate from the conservatory with an M.F.A. degree. - Master of Fine Arts.

The first full-length film by Aronofsky is the surrealistic thriller “Pi”, which was released in 1998, but work on it was started back in 1995. The film, despite the deep intellectual richness, was very popular not only among critics, but also among the audience. The money received for him allowed Darren to remove the next masterpiece - Requiem for a Dream (2000). This was followed by a couple of setbacks, but the film “Wrestler” (2008) with Mickey Rourke in the title role not only returned Aronofsky to its former glory, but also significantly increased it. Today, the director is working on new interesting and large-scale projects.

Difficult "Fountain"

We had to wait a very long time before the premiere of the third film "Fountain" - it was shown only in the fall of 2006 (in the program of the Venice Film Festival). There were enough difficulties during the filming process: budget cuts, replacement of the cast (instead of Pitt and Blanchett, the main characters were played by Jackman and Weiss). To reduce the cost of special effects, director Darren Aronofsky went to all sorts of tricks, removing and repeatedly increasing the simplest chemical reactions - the result was amazing. But the drama about life and death, faith and love failed at the box office: with a budget of $ 35 million, only 15.9 million earned.

Obstinate Wrestler and Crazy Ballerina

The dramatic film Wrestler was called the “resurrection of a career” by Mickey Rourke - for the role of a fighter with a difficult character and a serious illness, the actor was nominated for an Oscar. At the festival in Venice, the film received the main prize "Golden Lion".

Five nominations for an Oscar, a budget that was closed 25 times and conflicting reviews - the thriller Black Swan turned out to be Darren Aronofsky’s most successful film. True, only Natalie Portman received the statuette, reincarnated as a ballerina who could not stand the test of becoming a prima. Both Portman and Mila Kunis, portraying Nina's rival, worked hard on ballet, stood at the bench, despite injuries. But, of course, in the most striking episodes of the actresses, professional dancers replaced.

Turning to the Bible: “Noah”

The free presentation of the biblical parable “Noah” with Russell Crowe, Emma Watson and Jennifer Connelly did not cause much enthusiasm. The World Flood looked great, relations in the family of the hero Crowe were tense and dramatic, but 362 million dollars of fees with a whopping cost of 125 million did not seem like such a miracle as in the case of Swan.

Until recently, the director worked on the drama "Mother" - a joint project of the most popular actress today Jennifer Lawrence and Darren Aronofsky. Jen plays the main role in the film, with her starring Donal Gleeson, Michelle Pfeiffer and Javier Bardem. The premiere date has not yet been determined.

Darren Aronofsky is a big lover of wildlife (she stayed with the director from the time of his youthful travels). He takes part in campaigns to combat climate change and fights for animal rights.

Together with Weiss: 10 year romance

Despite his 48 years, Darren Aronofsky is not married. The long-term relationship with Rachel Weisz seemed like a fairy tale to fans of the director and actress.

They met since 2001, then Rachel became the heroine of his film "The Fountain" and gave birth to a child from the director - Henry was born at the end of May 2006. In the same year, the couple announced their engagement. But another film, Dream House, broke Darren’s wedding hopes: Rachel became interested in Daniel Craig and then married him. The director told the media about his breakup at the end of 2010. For the sake of his son, he and Rachel maintained a civilized relationship.

Jennifer Lawrence and Darren Aronofsky: an unusual couple

In 2012, Aronofsky began dating Canadian Brandi-Ann Milbradt (she is a television and film producer). And in 2016, everyone was talking about a new pair - Jennifer Lawrence and Darren Aronofsky. Probably, feelings between them broke out on the set of the film "Mother".

How the relations of this couple are developing, and whether it is worth waiting for the wedding bells, is unknown. But the tabloids happily seized on fresh gossip, the heroes of which are Charlize Theron and Darren Aronofsky. How they got the idea that Jen is jealous of her boyfriend for the Oscar-winning blonde is unknown. According to rumors, Darren showed Theron signs of attention during her relationship with Sean Penn. But this is all the "evidence" that does not seem convincing. So we will continue to follow the novel by Darren Aronofsky and Jennifer Lawrence, who is 21 years younger than the director. What will all this lead to?

Darren aronofsky

Darren was born in Brooklyn in 1969. His parents worked as teachers in a Jewish school. Darren studied at the best school in America, the Edward Marow School. After leaving school, the young man went on a world trip for six months, having managed to live in Europe, Guatemala and even the Middle East. Returning from the cruise, Darren entered Harvard University. The young man was always attracted to cinema and animation, which is why he chose the cinema art department. In his third year at the university, he made his first film, "Supermarket Cleaning." This short film was so good that it was nominated for a special award for students of the Academy of Film Academy. A year later, after winning the first film, Darren Aronofsky shot another short film - “Fortune Cookie”.

Short biography

So, after graduating with honors and two films, Darren left for Los Angeles to study again. In Los Angeles, Darren entered the American Institute of Motion Picture Arts, a year and a half later, after receiving a master’s degree, he defended his thesis with the film Protozoa and went back to New York to work on the full-length film Pi. “Pi” Aronofsky shot three years and presented the film in 1998 during the Independent Film Festival. Pi received the Fipressi and Grand Prix awards at the Gijin festival. In addition, the film Darren collected at the box office more than three million dollars, despite the fact that the budget of the picture was about sixty thousand dollars. “Pi” was accepted by critics and film academics, and Darren was able to shoot films again with the money he earned. Two years after the success of Pi, Darren Aronofsky presented the Requiem for a Dream and was again at the Olympus of success - the film received twenty film awards. In 2006, Aronofsky shot The Fountain, work on which began back in 2002, but the project was delayed due to the fact that the main actor Brad Pitt had a fight with Aronofsky and left the project. For the sake of working on “Fountain,” Aronofsky refused the offer to film “Batman” in 2005.

The presentation of the painting “Fountain” was during the Venice Film Festival. Two years after the release of the philosophical film, Aronofsky works with Mickey Rourke on the film “Wrestler”. “Wrestler” receives the “Golden Lion” at the Venice Film Festival, and the main actor Mickey Rourke receives the BAFTA and Golden Globe Award.

In 2010, the most financially successful project of Darren Aronofsky was released - the film “Black Swan”. In the film, the main role of the girl-ballerina is played by Natalie Portman, who received the Oscar for her work, the US Actors Guild Award and the Golden Globe.

In 2011, Aronofsky was a member of the jury of the Venice Film Festival.

Since 2001, Aronofsky maintained a romantic relationship with British actress Rachel Weisz, who gave birth to a son from Darren in 2006, after 9 years of relationship, the couple broke up, but remained in good relations. The director and actress bring up the child together. Darren Aronofsky believes that if there were no success in the painting “Pi”, he would have another chance to show himself to the world. But if “Requiem for a Dream” had not been successful, he would have been called a “sophomore who made one hit.”

Personal life

In the summer of 2001, Aronofsky began dating actress Rachel Weiss, whom she subsequently became engaged to in 2005. May 31, 2006 in New York, the couple had a son, Henry Chance. In November 2010, Weiss and Aronofsky announced their separation, but noted that they remained close friends and would raise their son together.

In 2012, he met with producer Brandy-Ann Milbradt.

Since September 2016, Aronofsky met with actress Jennifer Lawrence, whom he met on the set of the film "Mom!". The couple broke up in November 2017. In 2018, he began dating the Russian actress Aglaya Tarasova source not specified 1551 day .

Childhood and youth

Darren was born in Brooklyn, New York. This event took place on February 12, 1969. The boy's parents were conservative Jews who worked as teachers in local schools. When Darren turned one year old, Abraham and Charlotte Aronofsky moved to the Italian-Jewish quarter of New York - Manhattan Beach, where the boy spent his childhood.

Darren Aronofsky

Like his peers, Darren fell in love with the movie after watching Star Wars. Then thoughts arose about a future director's career. After graduating from the Edward R. Marrow School, parents paid for their son's trip to Europe and the Middle East, as well as summer vacations in the Republic of Guatemala.

Abraham and Charlotte believed that this step will help his son to relax after school, to see the world and understand himself - to decide on a future profession. And so it happened - in 1987, Darren entered Harvard to study animation and film.

Darren Aronofsky in his youth

In 1990, he removed his first short film “Supermarket Cleaning,” for which he received a student award from the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. It is noteworthy that the tape was shot for the course project.

In 1991, he shot another short film, which became an adaptation of the story "Cookies with the prediction" of the favorite writer of Aronofsky himself - Hubert Selby. In the same year, Darren graduated with honors from Harvard University with a bachelor's degree.

Movies

The following year, Aronofsky moved to Los Angeles to enroll in directing courses at a studio at the American Institute of Motion Picture Arts. His graduation project is the short film "Protozoa", which tells about people who are degrading from an informational drug. The main role was played by the young Lucy Liu. In 1993, Darren received a Master of Fine Arts.

Darren Aronofsky

In 1995, Aronofsky decided on a full meter. This project becomes the psychological thriller "Pi". Named after a mathematical constant, the film tells about the scientist Max Cohen, who is obsessed with number theory, who, due to his unexpected discovery, finds himself in a delicate situation. In an interview, Darren admitted that he drew inspiration from the “Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” (1920) Robert Wien and the films of Alfred Hitchcock.

In 1998, Darren presented Pi at the Sundance Independent Film Festival. The film received an award for best directing and for camera work. This success inspired the director to film the other work of Hubert Selby - the novel Requiem for a Dream, written in 1978.

Darren Aronofsky on the set of the film “Requiem for a Dream”

“Requiem for a Dream” Aronofsky was released in 2000. The film immediately gained popularity among the audience, and the creator brought nominations for Oscars and Golden Globes. However, the next project - "Fountain" - somewhat cooled the ardor of Darren. The conflict and the subsequent departure of Brad Pitt stalled the shooting for several years. Then Aronofsky for the first time tries himself in the role of producer of other people's films (“Depth” in 2002).

Darren Aronofsky on the set of the movie "Fountain"

When “Fountain” was again taken off the shelf, and this happened with the appearance of Hugh Jackman as the new lead actor, the producers agreed to allocate half of the original budget for the filming - $ 35 million. To reduce production costs, Darren asked his fiancée, Rachel Weiss, to play a major female role. The premiere of the film "Fountain" took place at the 2006 Venice Film Festival. Spectators and critics warmly greeted the film, but this did not save him from a failure in world box office.

Aronofsky used his impressions of this event when writing the script for his next film - "Wrestler", in which Mickey Rourke appeared. In the story, the wrestling star Taran gets a serious injury. Doctors say that if the main character wants to live, then he should forget about the ring. Taran tries to come to terms with this, but does not work out - his real life is there, in the ring. Where he, in the end, comes back.

Shot from Darren Aronofsky’s film “Wrestler”

After the presentation of "Wrestler" in 2008 at the next Venice Film Festival, the picture receives the Golden Lion Award. In his next tape, Aronofsky decides to replace the thug of Rourke with the fragile Natalie Portman, and the heart attack of the wrestler with mental problems with the ballerina. And so it turned out the film "Black Swan" in 2010, which paid for itself at the global box office more than 25 times. The starring company was Mila Kunis and Vincent Kassel.

Darren Aronofsky on the set of Black Swan

While "The Black Swan" rattled in cinemas around the world, Darren produced David Russell's biographical sports drama The Fighter, starring Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale.

Aronofsky’s next directorial work is Noah 2014. This biblical hero was remembered by Darren from childhood, and even then he thought that the character of Noah was not fully disclosed. The first drafts of the plot appeared in 2007, but it was only thanks to Eri Handel, with whom Darren worked in his latest films, who brought the script to mind.

Understanding that the scope of the production is serious, Aronofsky decides to publish a full-fledged graphic novel based on storyboards, which can be presented to large studio bosses. The case burned out: Paramount and New Regency agreed to help financially and technically.

“Noah” was predicted success, but fate decreed otherwise: in Indonesia, China, Pakistan, Egypt and a number of other countries, the film was banned from showing due to religious content. "Noah" with difficulty paid for itself at the world box office.

Darren Aronofsky and Natalie Portman

In 2015 and 2016, Aronofsky again engaged in producing: Lightning (2015) with Patrick Wilson, Jackie (2016) with Natalie Portman and Peter Sarsgaard, as well as Consequences (2016) with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Darren Aronofsky now

In early autumn 2017, the director released the film “Mom!” (The name is spelled that way), which film critics call the modern answer “Rosemary's Baby” and “Disgust” by Roman Polanski. Even before the premiere, Darren posted photos from the shootings on his pages on social networks.

This project was unusual for Aronofsky, not only in the horror genre, but also because the script was written in just 5 days, which made it necessary to interrupt work on another project. Darren is now planning to return to the interrupted project. Judging by the general description, this will be a film in the spirit of the new film adaptation of "It." Rumor has it that this will be the already announced adaptation of Dan Simmons' novel, Children of the Night, released in 1991.

Aronofsky also expressed his desire to make a superhero movie. Earlier, Darren’s name had already surfaced in preparation for the filming of “Batman. The Beginning "," X-Men. Wolverine ”and“ Man of Steel ”.
