The first scandal with his participation occurred in 2002, when it turned out that the portraits of his brush became a “slightly” edited print on canvas. Subsequently, it turned out that many of Nikas's paintings have duplicates made in this way and sold to private collections.

Commenting on the current situation, the artist accuses the producer Alexander Gaysin of producing these paintings, who allegedly arbitrarily made and sold fakes. Gaisin himself denies any guilt, claiming that he printed the paintings by order of Safronov.

Nikas Safronov was accused of selling fakes

In 2004, excerpts from the book of Safronov’s memoirs were read in the program of Viktor Shenderovich “Cream Cheese”, where they were called the main aesthetic shock of the year.

In 2008, on the transfer of "Gordon Quixote" Nikas was also criticized. Information was verified that the artist’s works had been acquired by the Hermitage for his own collection, as Safronov had previously said in an interview. Representatives of the Hermitage officially denied this statement of the painter.

In the winter of 2012, Nikas again found himself at the epicenter of a scandal that almost all the media “savored”. Criticism

In the early 2000s, the media got the story that Safronov was selling colorized photographs of Vladimir Putin and sold one of them to the former Minister of Internal Affairs of Russia Andrei Dunaev. According to later comments in the press of both Safronov and Dunaev, this story is the result of fraudulent actions by a certain Alexander Gaysin. He, as a real estate agent, got into confidence in Safronov, took possession of some of his personal belongings, and on this basis began to call himself his producer. At the same time, in order to discredit Safronov, Gaisin also spread the rumor that the artist had created a portrait of the statesman Vladimir Shamanov in the above manner. Shamanov also denied this in the media, and Safronov filed a complaint with Gaisin to the police, and he was detained.

In 2011, at the Sotheby’s auction, the painting "Dreams of Italy" was sold for $ 106,000, but this is the only case of sale at this price. After this, Safronov’s paintings were exhibited four more times at various auctions, but only one painting, “Portrait of Ringo Starr,” was sold for $ 6,850 in December 2015. In 2014, Safronov’s paintings were exhibited twice at the AI Auction, the maximum bids reached 60,000 rubles, which was less than the reserve price for the paintings.

In 2006, in an interview with the Trud newspaper, Safronov stated that three of his paintings were bought by the Hermitage. On October 17, 2008, in the program “Gordon Quixote” on Channel One with the participation of Nikas Safronov, the director of the State Hermitage Mikhail Piotrovsky was quoted as saying that the Hermitage had not bought any paintings. In response, Safronov said that he was referring to the so-called “biscuits”, molded from plasticine and then poured into a special form. In the same program, a number of negative assessments of Safronov’s work were made by famous art critics: Olga Sviblova, director of the Moscow House of Photography, Natalya Alexandrova, head of the painting department of the second half of the 20th century, and Ivan Lubennikov, associate professor at the Moscow State Academic Art Institute named after V.I. Surikov.

The issue of Safronov’s work in the Hermitage was the subject of further investigation. In 2018, the Sobesednik newspaper reported that the editors of the Gordon Quixote television program, who were preparing the broadcast and making a request to Piotrovsky, mixed up the concepts of “painting” and “work”. There are really no pictures in the collection, but there are “Two porcelain plates painted Safronov at the Lomonosov factory specifically for the Hermitage, and two porcelain figurines of a female cat and a male horse, made there ”. In the publication of The Interlocutor, Alexander Gordon commented on this as follows: “At that time I was not yet familiar with Nikas and his work, so it seemed to me that he was making himself a bigger artist than he really is. I became terribly opposed to this phenomenon. But it turned out that a terrible misunderstanding arose due to the fault of my editors, who provided me with incorrect information ”. In this regard, Gordon, he said, "Apologized to Nikas ten thousand times" and offered him cooperation, asking him to draw a poster for his 2018 movie, Uncle Sasha. Safronov agreed and drew a poster in which he presented the character of A. Gordon dead in a coffin.
